Beyond the scoreboard: Manchester City’s investment and the communities it has helped rebuild

Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki supplied the finishing touches as City maintained their perfect league start. But away from the scoreboard, another story deserves attention: what international investment has helped make possible in Manchester’s historically disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

That story is not simply about wealth arriving from overseas. It is about whether that wealth creates something useful for people who may never buy a match ticket. In east Manchester, the strongest argument for City’s wider contribution lies in the relationship between football investment, neighbourhood regeneration and access to education, sport and community support.

Since Abu Dhabi United Group bought Manchester City in 2008, investment has extended beyond the team. Club officials say more than £700 million has gone into the Etihad Campus and surrounding districts. The wider area now includes sporting facilities, educational provision and major entertainment infrastructure, although these developments involve different partners and should not all be credited to the club alone.

For districts affected by deindustrialisation, this matters. Long-neglected land and former industrial buildings have become places where people live, work and gather. Reporting on Ancoats and New Islington describes neighbourhoods transformed by new housing, businesses and residents, while also recording the pressures that rising rents have placed on lower-income households. Regeneration has brought opportunities, but its benefits are not distributed automatically.

Manchester Life illustrates both the scale and the complexity of this change. Established in 2014 as a partnership between the council and the investors, it has delivered approximately 1,500 homes across nine sites. According to the council, its wider regeneration programme includes preserved historic mills and 30,000 square feet of commercial space attracting independent businesses. These are tangible additions to neighbourhoods where development had struggled after the financial crisis.

New apartments, however, are not the same thing as affordable housing. The council reports that more than 3,400 homes have subsequently been completed in the area by various developers, including social-rent and affordable homes. That broader figure should not be mistaken for Manchester Life’s own output. The distinction matters when assessing whether investment has reached Manchester’s poorer residents.

Some of the most convincing benefits are less spectacular than a skyline. Beswick’s community hub brings together a sixth-form college, leisure facilities and health infrastructure. Its leisure centre includes a gym, fitness studio and two swimming pools. Designed for Manchester City Council, the development connects education and recreation within the wider Eastlands regeneration area.

For local families, the significance is practical: places to study, exercise and meet without travelling across the city. Facilities such as these give regeneration a social purpose beyond attracting wealthier newcomers. Their value lies not merely in what has been built, but in whether existing communities can use it.

The club’s charity, City in the Community, provides another route from football success to local benefit. Its programmes centre on physical and mental wellbeing, education, employability and inclusive community participation. Its Healthy Goals initiative funds new community football pitches where youth programmes can operate. A partnership announced with Italian clothing brand C.P. Company demonstrates how international commercial relationships can support neighbourhood spaces rather than remaining confined to elite sport.

These activities offer a more grounded account of positive social impact than claims that investment alone has solved deprivation. A football pitch or education programme cannot eliminate poverty. It can nevertheless create access, support and opportunity.

City’s community contribution does not erase questions about football governance or property agreements. BBC reporting puts council receipts from Manchester Life’s “super-profits” arrangements at just under £3 million, illustrating why public returns deserve scrutiny alongside headline investment figures.

International investment has helped create opportunity in places long associated with industrial decline. The challenge now is to keep that opportunity accessible to the communities regeneration is meant to serve.
