What you do not want is another half hour looking down at your phone on the train. Text to speech offers a way to hear the writing you chose.

This is not the same as finding a news podcast on a similar topic. A podcast follows its own conversation and editorial choices. An audio summary condenses the article. Reading aloud keeps the original piece as the focus, including the examples, qualifications, and turns of phrase that made it worth opening. For long-form journalism, those details are often the reason to read.

Take the article you want, not whatever has an audio button

Some publishers offer excellent narrated stories. Others provide audio for only a small part of their output, or none at all. Your interests may cross several sites, so a publisher’s audio catalogue does not necessarily contain the next article you want. A general reading tool can fill that gap for supported text you can already access, without changing which publication you follow.

CastReader can narrate supported articles while keeping their text available. On a computer, an extension reads the page where it is open. On a phone, the app can open a web URL. For a commute, prepare the article on the device you will actually carry rather than relying on the office browser tab.

Install the appropriate version from the CastReader downloads page. Open the article URL through the mobile app’s web entry, let the text load, and start Read Aloud. A publication’s normal login and subscription requirements still apply. Preparing the piece before leaving makes it easier to settle into the story once the journey begins.

Long-form writing has something to gain from a voice

A founder interview can be easier to stay with when a voice carries the questions and answers. A reported business feature often follows a decision from the initial problem to the outcome. An industry analysis builds a case rather than merely listing conclusions. These are good candidates for listening because the writing itself gives the narration somewhere to go.

Business reporting often pairs prose with charts or financial tables. Those visuals still deserve a look, but the surrounding explanation can be heard. An article about a company’s expansion, for example, may spend several pages on its strategy and the choices behind it. That argument is useful listening even when you plan to inspect the figures later.

Prepare the reading before the journey

Choose the article and voice before the journey. A measured pace suits a founder interview or a detailed account of a business decision, where names and qualifications carry much of the meaning. Background playback lets you put the phone aside while the article continues, with a connection available for cloud AI narration.

For a route with patchy reception, use the connected part of the journey for cloud AI narration. A page loaded in the app is not automatically a downloaded narration. Choose a section that fits that listening window, rather than trying to finish a long feature before the signal drops.

Save the source link in your normal reading list as well. When a chart or quotation needs attention later, you can return to the publisher’s page rather than trying to reconstruct the context from audio. The source remains useful after the journey ends.

Let the article keep its detail

Read Aloud follows the reporter’s wording, including the examples, qualifications, and changes of direction in the argument. AI Explain offers a different account of the content, which can be useful when you want it explained. For an interview you want to experience as written, stay with narration and give the answers time to develop.

The CastReader mobile app guide covers mobile reading alongside its connected bookshelves. The next journey might hold a book chapter instead of another article. Keep the choice tied to something you wanted to read already, rather than filling the time with whatever happens to be easiest to play.

A free tier and optional Pro access give you room to try the routine before deciding how often you will use it. The app shows the allowance for the selected voice. Judge the experience with a complete article: following the argument, pausing when needed, and returning to its source afterwards.

A commute can give a neglected article a place in the day. Open the right piece, confirm that it reads correctly, and keep its link for the details you want to revisit. You arrive with the argument and its context, not merely a remembered headline.
