Morocco has quietly become one of the most important car-making countries in Africa. Renault builds cars in Tangier, Stellantis runs a large plant in Kenitra, and a network of parts suppliers has grown up around them. Yet for most Moroccan households, the car they actually buy is not new. It is second hand, and in a large share of cases it is bought in Casablanca.

As the country’s commercial capital and its largest city, Casablanca has the deepest pool of used vehicles anywhere in Morocco. Company fleets are replaced there, families upgrade there, and dealers from smaller cities come there to source stock. That scale makes it the natural place to buy. It has also made it one of the harder markets for buyers to read.

A market that ran on phone calls and guesswork

For years, buying a used car in Casablanca meant visiting dealer lots, scanning classified ads and asking friends who knew someone. Asking prices for the same model could vary widely from one seller to the next, and there was little public data to show what a fair price looked like. The buyer with the most time and the right contacts usually got the better deal.

That lack of visibility had a cost on both sides. Buyers overpaid or walked away from good cars because they could not judge the price. Honest dealers struggled to stand out from sellers who were less careful with mileage claims or accident history. In business terms, it was a market with high search costs and low trust.

What changes when listings move online

The shift to online marketplaces has started to reduce that friction. When buyers can compare dozens of listings for used cars in Casablanca on one screen, filtered by brand, year, mileage and budget, the conversation with the seller starts from a very different place. The buyer already knows the price range, the seller knows the buyer knows, and negotiations tend to be shorter and more honest.

OneClickDrive, a car marketplace operating in Morocco, is one of the platforms built around that idea, bringing local sellers’ listings together so buyers can compare before they travel across the city to view a car. For dealers, the benefit is reach. A small showroom in Maarif or Ain Sebaa can now be found by a buyer in Rabat or Mohammedia who would never have walked past it.

Why transparency matters for the wider economy

A well-functioning used car market is good for more than individual buyers. When second-hand prices are clear, new car buyers know what their vehicle will be worth when they sell it, which supports new car sales. Clearer second-hand prices also help buyers and businesses make more informed vehicle purchasing decisions. And small businesses that depend on vehicles, from delivery services to tradespeople, can replace them without overpaying.

It also helps with safety. Buyers who can compare several cars are more likely to walk away from one with a doubtful history, and sellers who know their listing sits next to competitors have a stronger reason to describe the car accurately.

What buyers should still check

Online comparison is only the first step. The legal and mechanical checks still happen in person, and they still matter:

The registration card (carte grise) should match the seller’s national ID.
The chassis number on the papers should match the one on the car.
Any outstanding car loan must be cleared, with the lender’s release in hand.
An independent mechanic should inspect the car before money changes hands.
The ownership transfer should be registered promptly after the sale.

Testing the road before buying

Some buyers prefer to drive a model for a few days before committing to buy one. Short-term rental gives them that chance, and the same marketplace approach applies there too. Through OneClickDrive Morocco, drivers can rent a similar car in Casablanca or another city, see how it handles daily traffic and motorway trips, and then decide whether it is the right model to own.

A market growing up

Casablanca’s used car market is not going to lose its dealer lots or its word-of-mouth deals overnight. But the balance is shifting. As more listings move online and buyers get used to comparing before they call, the market is becoming faster, fairer and easier to trust. For a city that drives so much of Morocco’s economy, that is a meaningful change.
