The test drive is where you find out whether a car is genuinely right for you, and approaching it with a clear plan can save you from an expensive mistake.

This checklist walks first-time buyers through what to look for, listen for and feel for before handing over any money.

Start Before the Engine Turns Over

A good test drive begins before you leave the car park. Walk around the vehicle in daylight and look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint or signs of rust, which can point to previous accident repairs. Check the tyres for even tread wear and make sure all four are a similar brand and condition.

Before setting off, run through these quick checks:

Turn the ignition on and confirm that all dashboard warning lights illuminate and then switch off
Test the headlights, indicators, brake lights and wipers
Check that windows, mirrors, locks and the air conditioning all work properly
Look under the bonnet for leaks, corrosion or a low or dirty oil level
Ask whether the engine is cold, as a cold start reveals more about its health

If possible, ask the seller not to warm the car up before you arrive. Some starting issues and engine noises disappear once the engine has reached operating temperature.

Braking: Your First Priority on the Road

Once you are moving, test the brakes early in a safe, quiet area. They should feel firm and progressive, bringing the car to a smooth stop in a straight line. A spongy pedal, grinding sounds, squealing or the car pulling to one side under braking can all signal worn pads, warped discs or problems with the braking system. Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel when slowing down is another warning sign worth noting.

Steering and Handling

The steering should feel responsive and centred. On a straight, level road, loosen your grip slightly and see whether the car drifts to one side, which may indicate alignment or suspension issues. Listen for clunks or knocks when turning at low speed, especially on full lock in a car park, as these can point to worn joints or driveshaft components. Excessive play in the steering wheel is also something to raise with the seller.

Acceleration and Gear Changes

Accelerate gently at first, then more firmly when it is safe to do so. The engine should pull smoothly without hesitation, misfires or excessive smoke from the exhaust. In a manual car, the clutch should engage cleanly without slipping, and gears should change without crunching. In an automatic, gear changes should be smooth and timely, without jerking, delays or flaring revs between gears.

Listen for Unusual Noises

Turn the radio off and pay attention to what the car is telling you. Some of the most common noises to watch out for include:

Knocking or ticking from the engine, which may suggest internal wear
Whining that rises with speed, often linked to the gearbox or wheel bearings
Rattles or clunks over bumps, which can indicate tired suspension parts
Hissing or whistling that could point to vacuum or exhaust leaks
Squeaks from the brakes or belts under the bonnet

No used car will be perfectly silent, but persistent or worsening noises deserve a closer look by a qualified mechanic.

Comfort and Everyday Practicality

A car can be mechanically sound and still be the wrong choice if it is uncomfortable to drive. Adjust the seat and steering wheel to check that you can find a good driving position. Consider visibility, blind spots, the ease of parking and whether the boot and rear seats suit your lifestyle. Try to include a mix of roads in your test drive, such as suburban streets, a stretch of motorway and some rougher surfaces, so you get a realistic feel for how the car will perform day to day.

Why Where You Buy Matters

Even the most thorough test drive cannot reveal everything about a vehicle’s past. That is why choosing a trusted used car dealer is one of the smartest decisions a first-time buyer can make. Reputable dealers typically provide vehicle history information, carry out inspections before sale and are bound by consumer protection obligations that generally do not apply to private sellers. Dealers such as Enterprise Motor Group also give buyers the opportunity to compare several vehicles in one visit, ask questions openly and test drive without pressure.

A trustworthy dealer will welcome your questions about service history, previous ownership and any repairs, and will be comfortable with you arranging an independent inspection if you want extra peace of mind.

Take Your Time

Finally, never feel rushed. If something does not feel right during the test drive, it is perfectly reasonable to walk away or ask for a second drive on another day. Make notes as you go, compare each car against the same checklist and only commit when you are confident in your choice. A careful, methodical approach today can mean years of reliable, worry-free motoring ahead.
